Our Work in Zambia

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung opened its first representation in Zambia in the mid-sixties, shortly after independence. Civic education, research on socio-economic matters, support of trade unions, small scale industries and democratic organisations were the areas of operation. Despite Zambia's positive developments, many challenges still remain.

Today, the work of FES in Zambia is focused on democratic statehood, political participation and social justice. Believing in the importance of a functioning democracy in Zambia, we think that this ongoing task needs to be addressed on several fronts. Democratic fundamentals – like the division of powers, the rule of law as well as free and fair elections – must be complemented by a functioning national discourse, democratic political parties and a vibrant civil society, among others. Flaws in the political system, like corruption, the instability of the political opposition and social injustices, result from persisting democratic deficits.

The FES works together with various socio-political actors – governmental, civil society and international institutions - in order to engage in the further development of the democratic standards and to promote socially just political and economic development.

FES Zambia is currently working on these Focus Areas:
