ZCTU Workshop on the New Employment Code Act

In an effort to bring together our employment legislation into one law, the Zambian government through Ministry of Labour and Social Security and in consultation with other stake holders decided to merge all employment related legislation into one piece of law so referred to as the Employment Code Act of 2019. The Employment Code has since been enacted into law and it has come with some new provisions which will translate into new employment relationships. It is for this reason that the Zambia Congress of Trade unions (ZCTU) engaged its leaders through a sensitization workshop in Lusaka on the new law. The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is a membership worker based organization with forty six (46) affiliates drawn from both the public and the private sector. Total individual membership currently stands at close to 500,000 across the country, in addition the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions(ZCTU) has associate membership from among informal economy associations such as Buses and Taxes Association, Association for Vendors and Marketeers (AVEMA) and the Alliance for Informal Economy Association (AZIEA). With this membership, Zambia Congress of Trade stands out to be the largest and the most represented workers federation in Zambia. Which means this change in employment law will have wider ramifications on the majority of its members. The main objective of conducting the sensitization forum is to communicate to the general membership about the changes that have been made to the employment legislation and the ramifications thereof.
