Capacity Building Workshop with Shop Stewards in Retail

Promoting decent work and fundamental rights at work in Shoprite Holdings, Zambia Ltd.

The retail sector in Zambia is dominated by multinational companies. Promoting fundamental rights at work and the respect for international labour standards has been one of the focus the National Union of Commercial and Allied workers (NUCIW), in conjunction with UNI Global Union.

Promoting decent work and workers’ rights in the value chain of Shoprite is a big challenge for the union as the company uses non-standard forms of employment which are leading to decent work deficits. In order to eliminate such deficits and to promote better working conditions, the employees depend on well-informed and engaged shop stewards.

The workshop aims at strengthening these shop stewards and help them understanding their role within the struggle for good working conditions and in collective bargaining. As an outcome, the workforce of Shoprite in Zambia might expect a trained and well-informed representation by their elected shop stewards.

We globally support workers in their efforts for good working conditions. Social Justice can only be achieved through unified action and with reliable allies.
