Political Economy of Urban Transformation
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Lusaka office has agreed in principle with local partners to increase dialogue and work together on the Just City working line in Lusaka and Kitwe. The partners include, the Civic Forum on Housing and Habitat (CFHH), the Mineworkers Union of Zambia, the Copperbelt University, department of Urban and Regional Planning, the Alliance of Zambian Informal Economy Association (AZIEA) and the Kitwe City Council (KCC).
To increase dialogue on formalization, up-grading of informal settlements and public delivery of goods and services among stakeholders and policy makers the FES Zambia will be holding the second Kitwe Urban Development Forum to promote discourse among partners with an objective of making informal settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable in line with SDG No. 11. The relationship (active participation) among the state, local councils and community actors such as civil society and grassroot organisation plays a significant role in the urban development, just city and provision of public delivery of goods and services. It is against this background that the Kitwe Urban Development Forum will be considering to discuss, the Political Economy of Urban Transformation in relation to Public Service Delivery of Goods and Services to Informal Settlements in Kitwe.
The goal of the continued fora in Kitwe, is to increase dialogue on formalization, up-grading of informal settlements and public delivery of goods and services among stakeholders and policy makers. Key objectives of the Forum that were realized include;
1) The Promotion of dialogue, participation and policy engagement among policy makers, local authorities and non-state actors in addressing housing deficits, public delivery of goods and services especially to informal settlements.
2) Making contribution towards the achievement of SDG 11 of making Cities and Human Settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable and,
3) Creating an information sharing and networking platform on urban development in Kitwe.
