2021 International Annual SASPEN Conference

Social Protection and Social Services in the SADC Region: Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030

A timely convention, as the COVID-19 global pandemic accentuates the importance of Social Protection.

Every year the Southern African Social Protection Experts Network (SASPEN) brings together experts in Social Protection from within the SADC region and beyond, to its International Annual Social Protection Conference (IAC). This year in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office, SASPEN has the the pleasure of convening the 8th International Annual Social Protection Conference,in Johannesburg, South Africa from 4-6 October 2021.

This years conference theme, is particularly important, as there is a critical need to show conceptual under pinnings and concrete realities regarding the current progress in the provision of social protection in the form of social services, by both state and non-state actors in the SADC region. This is cardinal to the assessment of SADC countries' readiness to meet the social protection targets outlined in the AU Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only revealed significant gaps in the provision of social protection, but has also revealed opportunities for more robust social protection Interventions, such as that which is framed in this years conference theme, of exploring ways in which countries can establish systems that provide linkages between social services and social protection.

We as FES remain commited to our overall goal of ensuring social justice is attained through the advancement of various social protection initiatives.
