Addressing Kitwes Urban Growth through the Kitwe Urban Development Forum

Kitwe’s rapid urban growth brings both opportunity and pressing challenges—from access to serviced land and secure tenure to affordable housing and reliable municipal services.

Kitwe’s rapid urban growth brings both opportunity and pressing challenges, from access to serviced land and secure tenure to affordable housing and reliable municipal services.

On 24 September 2026, the Kitwe Urban Development Forum, which is a product of the Just City working line of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation with its local partners, brought together government, local authorities, civil society, academia, workers’ representatives and community stakeholders to discuss these issues and identify practical priorities for a fairer, more inclusive city.

The forum featured presentations on land access, administration and tenure security and affordable housing and informal settlements, creating space to share experiences and explore solutions that expand access to land, housing and essential urban services—especially for marginalized and disadvantaged residents.

Convened as part of the Just City work in Zambia, the forum reflects a shared commitment to collaboration and to a realization of a city where everyone can access opportunities and resources.
