The workshop focused on strengthening the capacity of MUZ branch leaders to understand key tax justice issues, particularly those relating to Zambia’s mining sector, and was a platform to enhance their ability to engage in advocacy and public dialogue on fair taxation and responsible management of mineral revenues. Zambia’s mining sector remains a critical contributor to the national economy, employment and export earnings. However, questions around the fair taxation of the mining sector, revenue collection, transparency and accountability continue to be important issues in ensuring that the country’s mineral wealth contributes meaningfully to sustainable national development. Tax justice is therefore not only a matter of government revenue, but also of social and economic justice. A fair and effective tax system can contribute to financing essential public services, reducing inequality and strengthening inclusive development. For workers and trade unions, understanding taxation and its implications is important in advocating for policies that balance the interests of workers, businesses and the broader public. As key representatives of workers at branch level, Mine workers Union of Zambia branch leaders have an important role to play in building awareness among workers and contributing to informed discussions on taxation, mineral revenues, transparency and accountability.
